What’s Good For The Goose…

I learned a bit of a lesson in the last week and I thought it would make a great post today. You see, you guys have gotten used to a certain type of post from me. A post that features my dorkier side. I love those posts, I have the most fun writing them and you like them, too for the most part. What I learned this week though is that you that visit my site here are not the same people that visit my company sites and read my posts there. I’m not saying none of you pop over and read but for the most part, I write for a different audience here than I do there. I forgot that. It turns out what is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander.

The beginning of this realization came during a meeting with my bosses. One of them mentioned to me a post I wrote where I “interviewed” Yoda. I loved it. I had a ball writing it. If I had posted it or something similar here, you guys would probably have loved it too. Someone he knows though, someone who really is representative of my real target audience for that company did not. They understood what I was trying to do but it didn’t do much for them. Admittedly, at first, I dismissed that opinion in my mind, giving in to my ego-ish side. I thought about it a lot though and I realized I should take this opinion as it really is. A gift. A free survey of what my target audience wants. More importantly a free survey of what they don’t want. So, I have been working on a new strategy that I plan to unveil next week. One that caters more to the people I am writing for than trying to force potential customers to cater to me.
